Where to Find Public Skating and Open Hockey in Western New York
Fifty-one sessions across eleven rinks, and one Ontario rink running more than a third of them.
Families searching "public skating near me" don't need a directory of every rink in the region -- they need to know which ones actually run open ice on a regular basis. Not every rink does.
Where it concentrates
Of the roughly 260 rinks and hockey-adjacent listings tracked here, open-ice sessions cluster hard around a small number of buildings. Seymour-Hannah Sports & Entertainment Centre in St. Catharines, Ontario currently runs the most open hockey and drop-in sessions on RinkIndex's calendar -- more than a third of everything tracked region-wide. Northtown Center at Amherst, Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena in Hamilton, and Cornerstone CFCU Arena in Lockport round out the next tier. Smaller but real programs run at Steele Hall Ice Arena (Fredonia), Leisure Rinks (West Seneca), Holiday Twin Rinks (Cheektowaga), Tim Hortons Iceplex (Rochester), Cazenovia Ice Rink and Riverside Park Ice Rink (both Buffalo), and Rochester Ice Center.
What "public skate" actually means on a schedule
Two different session types get lumped together as "open ice." Public and family skating sessions are for anyone with skates. Open hockey and drop-in sessions assume gear and usually a stick. RinkIndex tracks both, and the calendar filter -- Calendar, then Kind, then Drop-In or Open Hockey -- separates them from the camps, clinics and tryouts that share the same pages.
The honest caveat
This list moves. Rinks post their open-ice schedule in blocks -- a fall slate, a holiday slate -- and RinkIndex's count reflects whatever is currently on the calendar, not a permanent ranking. A rink not on this list may still run public skate; it just hasn't been added to RinkIndex's calendar yet, or its schedule isn't published anywhere the site's ingest can find. If your rink runs open ice and isn't showing up here, that's worth flagging to the operator directly -- a schedule that only exists on a whiteboard by the door doesn't reach a search engine.
